EP Fitness Owner - Scott Kubitz

The History of EP Fitness
Over two decades ago, Scott Kubitz, owner and CEO of EP Fitness, turned his dream into reality.  Through dedication and hard work, he opened his first fitness center in 1985, then known as Gold’s Gym, in El Paso. Kubitz initially came to El Paso on a football scholarship at UTEP.  Football led to weightlifting which in turn led to a successful bodybuilding profession.  A subsequent career took him out of El Paso to Las Vegas.  It was there that the opportunity presented itself: a Gold’s Gym license.  His love for El Paso and the people brought him back to start this new endeavor.  With a small savings and great determination, he opened the doors of his first fitness center on Mesa Street.   The name eventually changed from Gold's Gym to EP Fitness.  Many upgrades, expansions and renovations have kept EP Fitness the gold standard in supplying El Paso’s fitness needs. Eight fitness centers and over twenty years later, his initial philosophy has remained the same.  He believes that in order to maintain a competitive edge it is necessary to continuously give back to members as well as the community that has supported him.  This belief motivated him to establish Get Fit El Paso, a community outreach program dedicated to supporting health education and prevention initiatives. Other philanthropic efforts include his work with Angel Flight, a non-profit, charitable organization which provides free air transportation for medical and humanitarian purposes.   At his own cost, Scott volunteers as a pilot and utilizes his personal aircraft to transport patients who require specialized medical treatments not available to them locally.

The following is a brief history of EP Fitness.

West (Paragon)
In 1985, EP Fitness opened its first location on North Mesa. Then known as Gold's Gym, the 4,500 sq. ft. facility was the first in El Paso to offer weights, cardio equipment and aerobics classes. At that time, there were approximately 1,300 members. After five expansions brought the West side facility to 14,000 sq. ft, in 1997, EP Fitness - West moved into a 22,500 sq. ft. facility across the street on Paragon lane.

In 2006, EP Fitness completed a cardio room, group fitness and indoor basketball court expansion at the Paragon facility bringing it to 32,000 sq. ft.  At the time of its completion, the Paragon facility was the largest EP Fitness center in the city.

East (James Watt)
Later in 1987, EP Fitness also opened a 10,000 sq. ft. second location at 11330 James Watt. At that time, the two facilities had a combined 2,000 members. Since that time, EP Fitness - East has undergone several expansions, and now is approximately 22,500 sq. ft.

Montwood
In 2000, EP Fitness had grown to approximately 8,000 members. EP Fitness opened its third location at 12145 Montwood. The 20,000 sq. ft. facility increased membership to 11,000.

In 2006, EP Fitness began construction on a NEW EP Fitness center at 11705 Montwood Drive. On December 26th, EP Fitness opened the doors to the first facility of its kind.  The new Montwood "megacenter" is now the largest EP Fitness center in the city, nearly tripling the size of the existing Montwood gym. It has full- court indoor basketball, three group fitness rooms, an indoor running track, spa-like locker rooms complete with steam room for men and women, and much, much more.  This location also houses EP Women's Fitness - East, with its own separate private entrance.

Resler
In March of 2001, the 20,000 sq. ft. fourth location at 981 N. Resler was officially opened as EP Fitness. At that time, all locations were changed from Gold's Gym to EP Fitness. EP Fitness had 16,000 members at that time.

In May of 2006, EP Fitness completed an expansion at the Resler gym - adding a huge cardiovasular room and a cycling room for group fitness classes.

Northeast
In December of 2001, EP Fitness added a 22,500 sq. ft. facility at 10060 Rushing Rd in Northeast El Paso. At that time, EP Fitness had 24,000 members. In December of 2003, EP Fitness completed a 2,500 sq. ft. expansion of the Northeast club, making it the largest EP Fitness center at the time of completion, at 25,000 sq. ft.

In 2006, EP Fitness began construction on adding full-court, indoor basketball at the Northeast facility along with other cosmetic and equipment upgrades. On December 26th, the new Northeast facility became one of three EP Fitness centers to now offer its members indoor basketball.  EP Fitness - Northeast now occupies approximately 33,000 sq. ft. at Rushfair Center.

Interstate
In December of 2003, EP Fitness opened its sixth El Paso location at 1224 Wedgewood. At the time of opening, EP Fitness had 43,000 members. In December of 2004, EP Fitness completed a large cardio room expansion at the Interstate club.

EP Women's Fitness

In 2006, EP Fitness began construction on two Women's Fitness facilities: one in East El Paso, one in West El Paso. Women's Fitness offers premier fitness facilities to women in a spa-like atmosphere. Women's Fitness West opened at 1035 Belvidere on October 20th, 2006. Women's Fitness East opened December 26th,  2006, along with the new Montwood "megacenter" at 11705 Montwood.

At present, EP Fitness has more than 48,000 members, with six locations and two Women's Fitness facilities, occupying more than 230,000 sq. ft citywide. EP Fitness currently has more than 300 full-time and 125 part-time employees.
